The Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly’s Valued Volunteer of the Year Award is now open for nominations. The 2012 nominations close at 5pm on Wednesday, September 12th.
Over 1.5 million adults are involved as volunteers in Australian sport and recreation. This contribution is worth $2 billion annually and represents 165 million hours per year to running sport and recreation clubs and in rural areas this assistance is vital to maintain our community sporting clubs.
Volunteers are a most valuable resource and to highlight their contribution to sport and recreation in this region all clubs are eligible to nominate one of their long serving volunteers for the "Valued Volunteer of the Year Award". This award is presented annually at the Sports Assembly's Annual General Meeting to be held at the Horsham Sports and Community Club.
Previous winners read like the who’s who of Wimmera volunteers and include such names as Peter Miler (Football), Ian Taylor (Shooting), Willie Hanson (Football), Jeff Pekin (Table Tennis), Max Burke (Football Training), Helen Short (Netball), Maurie Wade (Basketball, Cricket), Shurlee Skiller (Netball), Bill Taylor (Natimuk Community Clubs), Maurie Dumesny (Cricket), Sylvia Penny (Greyhound Racing) and Murray and Debbie Hart (jointly) for their long serving assistance to the sporting clubs of Stawell. Nominations are welcome at any time with nomination forms available from the offices of the Assembly or on our website (see links below), and close in mid September.
All nominees are invited to attend the function and will be presented with a framed recognition certificate.
| The 2011 winner is Peter Miller nominated by the Horsham United Football Club. |
A long serving volunteer for the club, Miller epitomises the very essence of this award. Miller started his career with Rupanyup before moving to the Diggers back in 1980 when they played as Imps Wonwondah in the Horsham District League, before moving into Wimmera League and becoming the Horsham United Diggers.
In between pulling the boots on to help make up the numbers for the reserves, or pulling on the bright green runner’s outfit, or carrying a water bottle, Peter Miller has done it all for the club that he calls home. He has served as recruiting officer, a thankless task, but one he saw as important to his club.
