Riverside horsewoman Kerryn Golder is the January nominee for the Sports Star of the Year award.

Golder enjoyed considerable success at the Victorian Agricultural Show saddlehorse championships earlier in January, taking a third place in the Open Saddle Hack, and a fourth placing in the class 28 riders over 30 event. But the icing on the cake for Golder came when she took out the Equine award of excellence, scoring 90 out of a possible 100 points to beat all comers.

Riders have to compete in a minimum of three shows to be eligible for the award, and Golder described the win as one of her best yet, alongside riding in the prestigious Garryowen at the Royal Melbourne Show.

Golder has enjoyed great success over the past season with wins at Dimboola, St Arnaud and Masters at Werribee.

Golder is looking forward to the show season when it rolls around in September as she has qualified her 10 year old Chandon Park Contender for all the Royals and the Garryowen.

Golder joins Horsham ironwoman Susie Ellis, Warracknabeal athlete Chloe Bibby, centurion goalkickers Dylan Parish and Gavin Kelm, netballer Mardi Isbel, gymnast Ryan Morrow, Warracknabeal netballer Riley Richardson, croquet player Ken Bald and athlete Laura Hutchins in the final field for the sports stars for the year. All are in line to collect the Horsham Sports and Community Club Title of Wimmera Sports Star of the Year as well as the $1,000 Sports Star scholarship, at a gala dinner on February 13 and follow in the footsteps of previous winners including Alethea Sedgman, Mark O’Brien, Jason Niblett and Aaron Bruce.

Nominations for the Horsham Sports and Community Club Sports Star of the Year Award close the last day of each month and all monthly winners will receive an embroidered Sports Star of the Year jacket courtesy of DAGS Quality Screen Printing and voucher from Hip Pocket Workwear.

If you know of someone who is doing well at their sport and deserves some recognition, why not nominate them in the Sports Star of the Month. All nominees in the monthly award will be presented with certificates signed by the Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty and the monthly winner receives (aside from the jacket and voucher), a free ticket to the annual presentation and a specially struck medallion from Wimmera Trophies and Gifts.
