2009 Horsham Sports & Community Club Wimmera Sports Star of the Year
Mark O'Brien
In front of a crowd of over 160 people, Horsham Cyclist Mark O’Brien was crowned the Horsham Sports and Community Club’s Sports Star for 2009 at a presentation dinner held at the Horsham Sports & Community Club on Monday, February 15th, 2010.
O’Brien’s dream of making it into an Australian team came true when he pulled on the green and gold and competed in the Under 23 world championships in Switzerland, and was the first Australian home in 28th position in the gruelling event. O’Brien was a silver medallist at the National Titles, 10th in the Elite Australian Championships, 5th in the “Ambacht Kermesse” in Holland, 25th in the Tour Of Ireland, where he met his idol Lance Armstrong.
| O’Brien also found time to compete locally where he was 2nd in the Bendigo Tour, 5th in the Tour of Canberra and 7th in the Bendigo Madison. O’Brien was flanked by his parents Gerard and Helen, brother Xavier and girlfriend Kat when announced as the winner, and was full of praise for the support he has received throughout his career by his family, secondly by Drapac Porsche and finally by the Horsham Cycling Club who gave him his start. O’Brien was also appreciative of the support of the Wimmera sporting community, who had followed his career with a great deal of interest, especially through his diaries in the Wimmera Mail Times. O’Brien says he is looking forward to fulfilling his cycling potential in the next few years, which means riding more internationally, and is also hoping to secure a professional contract to help him achieve his dreams. |

This year she has recorded victories in the 2009 Victorian State Championships, the Auscup National Competition and the Target Rifle Australia National Championships in the sub junior division. Latest results from the Nationals place her as the Australian Sub Junior Champion for the 50m Prone rifle, the 50m 3 Position 20 Sport Rifle and the 10m air rifle and the bronze medallist in the Open Women’s Air Rifle. The Horsham Volleyball Association is a good case model of an Association that is all inclusive. Not only do they cater for their elite players – having 5 state reps in 2009, but the Association gives opportunities to players of all abilities. The Association staged a successful Celebrity Challenge Charity Match which raised funds for Horsham Chaplaincy and Salvation Army Youth Services, instituted a membership card with discounts to local businesses, was successful in obtaining grants, sponsorships and in kind support from local and Melbourne businesses. The support for the Horsham College Volleyball Program continues, and the partnerships established with local businesses continues to flourish.

The Horsham Soccer Club has come a long way in a short time on the back of a tremendous amount of work by a band of dedicated volunteers. The club was formed in 2004 and run as an internal development competition. Teams entered in Regional Country Championships in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Horsham Soccer Club arranged home and away games with clubs from Warrnambool, Hamilton and Naracoorte during this time. It was during 2008 that a push from within the club for better competition the club looked to join Ballarat District Soccer Association. With the move to the league approved, the club set about meeting the league requirements, but not forgetting those juniors and others who had a more local orientation to the game. The club runs two competitions - internal and B.D.S.A teams. Two teams were eventually entered in the B.D.S.A, the u-17s reaching the elimination final and the u-13s made the grand final. This in our first year in a league competition is truly testimony to our players, coaches and club members. Year 2010 we start the season with the same ideals as before along with the opportunity to create a senior team. The H&D.S.C wishes to provide for our community by adding to our local sporting arena and offering the world game to those that wish to play soccer. |
