WIMMERA SPORTS STAR AWARD - DECEMBER 2009

Mark O'Brien wins the Dags Quality Screen Printing and Hip Pocket Workwear Sports Star Of The Month Award for December 2009

Mark O’Brien’s achievements over the past 12 months have been extraordinary. O’Brien gained selection in the Australian under 23 road cycling team, after taking silver at the National Titles. He then went on to compete in the World Championships in Switzerland, where he finished as the first placed Australian rider in overall 28th place. O’Brien also competed in the Tour of Ireland where he rode against cycling icon Lance Armstrong. On top of all these achievements, O’Brien completed his uni degree, and is now looking at securing an overseas professional contract.

 

Mark O’Brien now joins other previous monthly winners Oscar McDonald (tennis), Thomas Paterson (Shooting), Shaun Bruce and Jannik Blair (basketball), Alethea Sedgman (Shooting), James White (Athletics), Rupert Christie (Swimming), Rory Taggert (Football) and Sherridyn Coleman (Hockey) to complete the field, and are now in line to win the overall title of Sports Star of the Year and collect the Horsham Sports and Community Club Title of Wimmera Sports Star of the Year as well as the $1,000 Sports Star scholarship.

This award continues to develop as a prestigious award that seeks to recognise and applaud specific individuals who make a significant sporting contribution to the Wimmera community. 

If you know of someone who is doing well at their sport and deserves some recognition, why not nominate them in the Sports Star of the Month.  All nominees in the monthly award will be presented with certificates signed by the Minister for Sport and Recreation James Merlino and the monthly winner receives (aside from the jacket and voucher), a free ticket to the annual presentation and a specially struck medallion from Wimmera Trophies and Gifts.

Nominations for the Horsham Sports and Community Club Sports Star of the Year Award close the last day of each month and all monthly winners will receive an embroidered Sports Star of the Year jacket courtesy of DAGS Quality Screen Printing and voucher from Hip Pocket Workwear.
