WIMMERA SPORTS STAR AWARD - APRIL 2009

James White wins the Dags Quality Screen Printing and Hip Pocket Workwear Sports Star Of The Month Award for April 2009

Jame White April Sports Star of the month
James White is presented with his Monthly Sports Star Award jacket by Terri Attrill from Dags Quality Screenprinting and Hip Pocket Workwear.

James White’s outstanding achievements in athletics have seen him as the April 2009 Monthly Sports Star winner. At just fifteen years of age, he joins Alethea Sedgman in the running for the 2009 Horsham Sports and Community Club Sports Star of the Year Award.  For his efforts, James will receive an embroidered Sports Star of the Year jacket courtesy of DAGS Quality Screen Printing and voucher from Hip Pocket Workwear for having been the successful April monthly winner.

James claimed back to back titles in the open 120 metre event at the Australia Post Wimmera Footballers Gift held earlier this year. Nine Wimmera league footballers competed for just six positions available in the final heat. James finished in a convincing time of 13.91 seconds taking the title, beating his 2008 time of 14.32 seconds in the same event.

James proved he was one of the best athletes in the state when he competed in the sprint events at the Victorian State Secondary Schools Association Championships. He claimed the Under 15’s 200 metres title completing the race in 24.50 seconds. A third in the Under 15’s 100 metres after a stumble out of the blocks caused a few issues. To finish off the Championships, James also claimed fifth place in the long jump. James now waits to see if he has earned selection to the Pacific School Games held in late November this year. James has his heart set on winning the Victorian Secondary School’s Sporting Association 100 metre and 200 metre sprints.

Earlier this year James broke a long standing record held by Tim Watson which was set back in 1975. Tim ran the 100 metre race in 11.60 seconds with James breaking the 34 year old record by 0.17 seconds in a time of 11.43 seconds. James and Tim will meet in Melbourne on the Sunday Morning Footy Show in a few weeks, where the two will race off against each other in a fun run.

Monthly winners are eligible to win the $1,000 Sports Star Scholarship and trophy at the 2010 Horsham Sports and Community Club’s Sports Star presentations.  If you know of someone who is doing well at their sport and deserves some recognition, why not nominate them in the DAGS Screen Printing and Hip Pocket Workwear Sports Star of the Month.
