Horsham masters swimmer Helen Kelly has been successful in winning the Sports Star of the Month Award for October.  Helen has been a stalwart Horsham Swimming Club member, coach, participant and official and last season won the Kenny Perpetual Trophy for the Horsham Swimmer of the Meet at the Wimmera Championships, the Rose Bowl as the best performed overall swimmer of the Championships and won the Dalgleish Perpetual Shield for the best performance by an individual at the Victorian Country Championships.

After successfully contesting and winning a number of other events at local level, Helen headed to Mildura for the Masters Competition in early October.  Here she took out an incredible seven individual events in breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke and followed up these performances with six individual victories and a relay win at the Australian Masters in Adelaide late October.  The latter victories made her the Australasian Champion in these events and Helen’s next aim is to contest the World Masters Championships which will be held in Perth in April 2008.

Helen now joins other previous monthly winners Betty Cozens (Lawn Bowls), Ashley Bolwell (Shooting), Josh Pahl (Golf), Tristan Barrett (Hockey), Lachie Robinson (Volleyball), Susan McKenry (Equestrian) and Jake Roberts (Football)  in line to win the overall title of Sports Star of the Year and collect the Horsham Sports and Community Club Title of Wimmera Sports Star of the Year as well as the $1,000 Sports Star scholarship.
