Support for talented Wimmera athletes

To help local aspiring athletes, the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly (WRSA) has established the Wimmera Sports Foundation with vital support from the Horsham Sports and Community Club.

In these tough climatic and economic conditions combined with rising fuel prices, the Assembly recognises that additional assistance may be the difference between a sports person continuing their pathway to the elite level or opting to stay and compete more locally. 

This Foundation currently stands at just over $52,000 and is invested to produce an income which the Assembly offers as cash grants to talented Wimmera based athletes twice annually.  The Sports Star of the Year Award sponsorship from the Horsham Sports and Community Club enables additional dollars to be added to the Foundation each year and the interest from the investment is then allocated to athletes to help offset the travel, accommodation and equipment expenses associated with their sports participation.

The Foundation is now open for applications. Applications can now be taken all year round, and should be submitted by the last business day of each month to be considered by the assessment panel.

Australian Institute of Sport Cyclist Jason Niblett, West Coast Eagles footballer Tim Houlihan, Australian Small Bore Shooting Team member Eddy Nagorcka, National League basketballer Aaron Bruce,  Victorian Country Tennis Championships winners Blair Hart and Lachlan King are examples of athletes that the Foundation has supported as they have pursued their sporting goals.

Since its inception in 1988, the Wimmera Sports Foundation has given away over $42,000 to 175 different athletes making it a genuine asset for the up and coming sports people of the region. It can provide them with an added incentive to make it at state level and, perhaps more importantly, can subsidise the cost of providing the necessary transport and accommodation for their families.
