Horsham United’s Peter Miller is the Valued Volunteer of the Year award winner for 2011.
A long serving volunteer for the club, Miller epitomises the very essence of this award. Miller started his career with Rupanyup before moving to the Diggers back in 1980 when they played as Imps Wonwondah in the Horsham District League, before moving into Wimmera League and becoming the Horsham United Diggers. |

Miller served on the committee in a variety of roles, at the same time playing out his career with the reserves where he won a League best and fairest in 1984.
A one year hiatus at Taylors Lake interrupted a 30 plus year association with the Diggers.
When the time came to hang the boots up Miller filled the role of match day secretary. It was not uncommon to see Miller at the footy to help the under 14’s get up and about early in the morning, and still see him there filling out the senior results at the end of the day.
In between pulling the boots on to help make up the numbers for the reserves, or pulling on the bright green runner’s outfit, or carrying a water bottle, Peter Miller has done it all for the club that he calls home.
He has served as recruiting officer, a thankless task, but one he saw as important to his club.
Miller also coached Wimmera League under 18’s in a very successful period, between 2004-2008 where he helped mould a number of regular senior players of today, through those teams.
He still talks about the day at Ballarat he made Clinton Young the footballer that he is.
A tireless worker not just for his beloved Diggers but also for the community. Miller through his band the “Leatherheads” and before that a number of different bands, under different names, would be the first to put his hand up for charity gigs and events, the 50 years of Wimmera rock a classic example.
It is people like Peter Miller that makes our clubs and communities as strong as what they are.
Always first to put their hand up to undertake any task around the club, from committee person to administrator, club runner and water boy, or even chief cook and bottle washer, it is these people that deserve the recognition for keeping our clubs and associations going. |
